I agree that he didn't invent anything, but he was a kid who got national media attention for being escorted out of his school by police. That would severely damage his high school experience as others would suddenly have a very negative view of him. After visiting the White House he would have a positive reason to be known and would not be as likely to be a pariah. I don't know that he deserved to visit the White House, but he also didn't deserve the mistreatment he received either.
