beyond scared straight
On further thought, we do something similar to zoos in the scared straight programs. Young people are introduced to convicts to show them what life is like in prison to try to influence their life choices. Again, it is done for educational purposes though.
For all of the bad things that zoos do, they also raise awareness about animals and make people care about them, helping conservation efforts. They let children see animals that they otherwise would never get to, and they help keep endangered and threatened species alive. Wild animals should not be captured for zoo purposes and zoos should keep animals in enclosures that are adequate to their needs and comfort, but to equate zoos to prisons is not accurate.
