There is no such thing as absolute altruism
That was one (granted big) action. Even of he does things not for himself for the rest of his life, he has been greedy at least once in his life, maybe not even realizing it. At one point in time we have been greedy, whether we knew we were or not. So we are a little greedy, we are just not always greedy. Some less than others.
I agree that it is hard not to be greedy but then what about people like ghandi who went around liberating people from cruel laws whilst becoming almost completely selfless.
