Food Network ran a special showing how much food is wasted simply because it isn't pretty. Who cares if a tomato has a spot on it? You cut it off and eat the rest! I suggest that grocery stores simply mark down the "unattractive" produce and let people decide whether or not to purchase it for themselves. This way, there is less waste and loss of profit for grocers and some produce would be more affordable. Maybe more people would eat fruits and veggies if they were a bit cheaper. If grocers do not want to sell it, they should get tax incentives to donate to food banks or local farms for livestock use.
