i see you have already opened a thread and presented your opening statement. Over to you, @Jrardin12 for the response
I am now
all of ya ready? ??
ok then. If Allirix is set to go. we can fix friday/saturday. Socialism > Capitalism. Allirix (For) vs Jrardin (Against). 3 Arguments Each. Moderated by Nemiroff.
i believe the agreed topic was capitalism vs socialism
Waiting for @Allirix to agree to start.
ok great. then let me know the topic and when you wanna go.. I'll start a new thread.
I agree it will have to be a clean thread
@nemiroff yes those are the calls. But i wanted to do it live on a whole day basis. So if its 3 arguments each, they can put it out any time of the day and you?ll take care of not having any vulgar and offensive comments coming out of either the competitors or external audience anyhow. After all six arguments are presented, we may then summarize the whole debate as to which side had what pros and cons.
also do u want me to create another thread for it? So that we dont jam up one thread with all the future debates we hold.. probably
I am ready whenever@Allirix is. I will let him start it off.
we don't have to do it live. leave your argument here and let the next person respond within 24 hours or whatever.
what would be my role as moderator? im assuming im not here to fact check or punish bad behavior but to keep the conversation focused and call out tangents/distractions.
@Allirix, sounds good to me. The weekend works for me as well.
great to have you all on the same page. thanks. so You'll have to give me a GMT format time and date for me to be there. cause Im from Asia. I wanna watch it go.
Socialism (me) vs Capitalism (you)?
That seems to sum up a lot of the different views we have.
Also I cannot commit to a time until the weekend but I'm happy to have this as a long form debate moderated by Nemiroff
I will let you suggest something @Allirix.
sure. what time and what topic though?
So, whatabout Allirix vs Jrardin with Nemiroff as the moderator? tomorrow?
great. What say we try our first one? maybe tonight (According to Bangladesh standard time). We can set up a scene.
Any changes you want to make I am ok with.
But it would be great if we had an app. Meanwhile we can make the best of what we have in this one. It's gonna be tough. But not impossible
i have these ideas i wanna put to good cause to improve myself at the same time
i have no background in coding. I'm actually doing my major in life science- Biotechnology specifically. So, I dont know really.
I love this idea. But this app's single thread structure works poorly for organized debate. Something like Kialo.com is better, but while it's amazing at splitting and organizing ideas into complex threads, its threads are too complex and incoherent to be actual debates. You just create branches where the burden is on the reader to piece it together into a narrative. I believe the burden should be on the debaters to stitch ideas together into a persuasive narrative to convince the reader.
So, how about we make a web app that delivers the debating experience you're after?
An experience I imagine lies somewhere between this app and Kialo? My view is a multithreaded structure like reddit lies in this middle ground, but I'd love to hear more about what ideas you have.
I'd probably only commit to developing this if someone else joins in on the coding. While I know a bit about web development, it's not my field of expertise and I work better in a team I can throw bad ideas at.
PS in case you want to know more about what I am thinking, I'd use something called the JAMstack for this app to minimize hosting fees to $0 while it is small and easily allow it to be cross-platform (PWA). And I would use Facebook's ReactJS for the static frontend hosted on Netlify ($0 hosting) and a NodeJS REST API hosting the dynamic content on either Heroku, AWS, Firebase, or App Engine (generous $0 free tiers based on usage, and costs scale with usage afterwards)
So what do you say? Do you wanna develop an app?
In that way, we may actually taste the rhythm of a debate rather than just putting up opinions on the table. Using our logic either side will try to best one another and then the moderator will summarize the pros and cons of the debate. However, the rest of the audience may also participate by stating their opinions respectfully after the debate is over; not during. The moderator will make sure of that. We'll need some more rules along the way. But I think we need a start with some of our best presenters as of now.
So, we can arrange specific topic based debate with timeline and motion and stuff. So, the topic will be like-
Is Fantabulous a word?
X vs Y
5 Rounds each
Then after a period of 6 hours or so after posting the topic both X and Y will study on the topic, set their facts and meet in the middle.
Every debater gets a 3/5/7 rounds each to present their facts. Not more. Not less. So, while they stay on the debate, they have to present all their arguments within that limited range. And the debate ends.
There may be "No Winner" clause although "Agree & Disagree Numbers" will account for a winner by public votes. Yet, we may take another top debater Z to moderate the event and maintain the timeline.
ok thanks NEMIROFF. I see you?re a top debater. So, it will be enough if u consent.
sure, what's your idea?
So, I was going through the app and found out our best debaters debating across multiple threads. I'm proposing a more organized and structure orientated debate on specific topics if u guys are interested. Sharing my ideas just.
