how does America being a Russian ally protect anyone but America?

Putin and many of the Russian people see it as their right if not their obligation to dominate other countries. you being their ally just means they can safely do so without you intervening.

it should be a priority to protect those countries by making peace with Russia.

I'm not arguing against peace with Russia. I'm saying it should not be a top foreign policy goal. if peace can be accomplished without selling out other countries, great. but protecting those countries from Russian aggression is more a more important foreign policy objective.

you might be right, Putin might want war, and then we're all in trouble. what harm cam come of Trump attempting to create Peace and attempting to limit Russia military actions peacefully. since the last thing you want is trump at war, isn't it good to try to stop war?

except that Putin's public image is all about sticking it to the west and retaking Russia's place as a super power. he can't play nice with the other children. he has a long history of playing it both ways. he tells the west he wants peace and tells his own people they will conquer. he doesn't want peace.

you don't believe Russia can go from "we can destroy the world" to "we can destroy the world, we just won't do it"
Russia would benifit from becoming alies with the US, however, they would not be able to invade any countries. so peace with Russia would benifit: The US, Russia, and all the countries afraid of Russia invasion.

did you miss their invasion of Crimea last year? that is a part of Ukraine, an Eastern European country. it is not a what if statement. they have already invaded eastern Europe. they invaded Georgia a few years ago.

Russia is convinced it is a super power that rivals the US. Russia, and specifically Putin and his Allies, want hegemony over all the former Soviet Union's territory. this makes them violent and expansionist. even if America wanted to be Russia's ally, their goals and Europe's goals and completely contrary.

the only way to be an ally if Russia is to give them a free pass to conquer free and independent counties.

since Russia isn't invading Europe right now, there is no reason not to have peaceful relations with them

not at any cost. we make peace, establish fair rules. if they break the rules we end the peace, not give them millions. peace with Russia will benifit america, as having to worry about Russia doing something bad takes a lot if money and resources. Common sense will be needed.

so if Russia invaded and conquered eastern Europe America should just ignore that?

at any cost?
