there are many reasons. I have stated one due to space constraint

I would say it began as a way to explain phenomena that were beyond our comprehension and to make us feel in control. for example storms are because Poseidon is angry and to stop them we make a sacrifice. we now feel we understand it and can do something about it. the social aspects certainly added to it, but it wasn't the main reason to create it.
