Depending on the project they can be, but typically projects force students to work independently, do research, and learn about the subject. This allows them to learn and retain more than a lecture would, and encourages skills that will help later in life. By teaching time management, organization, presentation and independent working, projects teach skills that are applicable to almost any job, as well as preparing for university or college.
