we will need it soon but we simply can't afford it right now. giving everyone in the nation 50k would cost 16 quadrillion dollars. yes more then trillions. it would by itself dwarf the rest of the budget combined several times over.
however automation will cause 2 huge changes:
1) most jobs will be erased, and likely not replaced. without an alternative form of income, capitalism will collapse as consumers cannot consume.
2) our productivity will skyrocket, and if taxed appropriately, will enable us to afford the basic income and save our capitalist economy.
It should have a universal employment system that permits work even without ID. Cryptocurrency can be implemented instead of ICE. Preventing people from working is the major catastrophic event in society, as it is way easier to get guns, drugs, and tattoos than it is to shine somebody's chrome rims on their car for $10. In a nation where they would rather hire the few to capture and jail humanity indefinitely, the point of making use of the captured is abandoned.
Those who orchestrate and manage the jailors could easily place short term jobs on the ATM Cryptocurrency devices with free WI-FI.
The problem is that there are sadists who simply want to abuse the weakest in a situation where they are already scared and distraught because they were never born with the paperwork those employed by ICE to attack them, supposedly possess.
