Firstly of all, only the butt slap is appropriate for children. And one should use this when they are rude for instance, or when they act too capricious. They will learn to speak propely and to take no for an answer. Slapping should not be used to impose respect of the parents or of the strangers. Respect is deserved and there are other more appropriate measures to punish disrespect. :)

Firstly, the spank should really be only exceptional. Excessive spanking is child abuse. The exceptional spank creates for the child an understandable imminent danger. A spank is direct, relatively painful and immediate. The child understands that this is not what he wants. Secondly, this should only be used for important matters so he understands the difference between important misbehaviours and the less important ones. Thirdly, the parent gets respected only by applying a certain nature of punishement. This is proven by the human nature, the penal law system shows it very well: a human needs to know something bad is prohibited, and you can only prohibit something by punishing it.

well i dont know much about India(Indian myself). But to be honest, in the north eastern states of India, corporal punishments like slapping in schools are prohibited. Cant say about the rest of India though.
