Voting without understanding what and who you are voting for makes the system worthless. Anyone who becomes informed about the parties, their platforms, and the candidates will either use this information to make an informed decision about who to vote for, or decide that none of the candidates represents their interests and not vote. Making voting mandatory would result in a lot of random votes from the uninformed, and a lot of spoiled ballots from the disillusioned.
