I'm not sold on everything he's done, but the Dark Tower series was incredibly romantic. Only the fifth book sucked. Plus I'm pretty sure during a period of his life he thought Roland was real, the Dark Tower was real and that he himself was a prophet of that story. That near reverence through most of the story is what gives it's BRUTAL ending such power.
There is no other author anywhere near his caliber. Not only is he talented at thriller and horror, but look at The Shawshank Redemption and The Green Mile.
