Society has fundamentally shifted over the last few decades. I don't know how old you are, but when your parents finished school they could expect to be able to earn a livable wage in most jobs. Basic manual labor, like a factory, was well rewarded. These days Companies don't give a shit about their employees. They are a resource to be used up and discarded. There are many, many people working full time jobs (sometimes more than 1) and still living below the poverty line.
Their choices are definitely significant in their "financial status", but pretending that things haven't changed for the worse and that economic opportunities for the majority of people haven't significantly declined does not help anyone. Well I suppose it helps the CEOs of those companies that profit from exploiting poor people.
