Student leaders get to learn responsibility and fairness. They gain experiences of leadership. The student population can also understand the concept of democracy, which will increase their interest in current issues. Not only that, since the student leaders are for the students, the students should have a say in who the student leaders should be.
In the case of ASB...? You should see my school. Some students can handle things like ASB responsibilities very well.
Students tend to have strong ideals but lack the experience and wisdom to temper them.
