True. I did not mean to imply that the Constitution should be used as an argument in and of itself.

I meant more along the lines of your argument. The constitution lays out what the census needs to be and for why and you are correct, it is meant to determine the population of every region. Not the number of citizens in every region. In this case the constitution is quite clear why it is needed, as opposed to the section on guns which is quite vague and open to interpretation.

But people who are likely to agree with Trump trying to add the question are almost certainly going to be right wing. And people on the right wing tend to say they believe the constitution needs to be protected. You can't believe both without being a hypocrite.

I believe we have both argued against using the constitution as the ultimate reason for something in gun debates.

however, we must ask what is the purpose of the census. the purpose is to get an accurate headcount so that we can properly plan. if you only count citizens and then build a road or hospital based off those numbers.... it's going to be inadequate, including for the citizens. I would hope there are records of citizens, probably with the IRS, homeland security, naturalization office, and many other places. we should definitely have that. but using the census for this is pure political games.

Section 2 of the 14th Amendment states: “Representatives shall be apportioned among the several States according to their respective numbers, counting the whole number of persons in each State... excluding Indians not taxed...”

It requires that all persons be counted. Not white people, not citizens, all persons. Attempts by the trump administration to add a question that will discourage non citizens from answering the census is blatantly unconstitutional.
