I think it would likely be unpleasant at first because as the new guy you would have to do whatever they want. If you are lucky it's just getting coffee and running errands, but there would likely be plenty of illegal things that you would be told to do.

After you had been in for a while, you would start seeing the benefits. Once you became a made man, the work would be rewarding.

As you said though, eventually the cost would be too high.

To be honest, all of my information about the mafia comes from the media and literature, so it may not be a fair or accurate image of what it is really like.
