Like I said, i'm not saying it's useless. The opening question is a bit ambiguous in what it means by "works". If that means does it have uses, then absolutely the UN works. If it means "does it do what it was intended to do", then the answer is "sort of". It does foster international discussion so that is definitely good. but the founding principle was to stop wars and conflicts. And by that measurement I don't think the UN works.

What do you say about that the un do a lot of different kinds of activities, may be it can not stop conflicts but it has made a lot of project for childrens' education, it helps many of african countries.... Is that nothing?

How so? The reasons that the great powers didn't go to war after WW2 was because of nuclear weapons. The only significant world issue that was really addressed by the UN was Korea. And the only reason that passed was because the Soviets walked out before the issue came up (they regretted that).

I'm not saying the UN is useless. It does have it's uses. Peacekeeping forces, Nuclear Non-Proliferation, Arms embargoes as examples. But the primary thing it was designed to do, ie prevent conflict, it is largely useless at.

I disagree with your assessment.
world peace was an ideal end goal, not an expected immediate goal.

the purpose of the un was not to legislate or enforce. it was to talk. if it was given teeth, any opposing nation would simply not join and it would end up just another military alliance like nato raising tensions till the next world war. that's why the ultimate enemy of the time was given veto power. so that they would join.

I think the world would look alot different, for the worse, if the UN didnt exist.

I think it has it's uses. But ultimately it is useless for what it what it was supposed to do. The idea was to prevent war and conflict. There are like a dozen wars going on right now. The UN is powerless to do anything about that.

The UN is toothless. It doesn't have the power to actually do anything. And even if it did, the power of Veto makes the exercise pointless most of the time anyway. There is very rarely a time when China, Russia, US, UK and France agree on things that matter.
