If you think we are the only life in the universe you are crazy. Scientists took a picture of a spot in the universe that appeared to be nothing but when examined they found that there was millions of galaxies with even more stars with possible planets orbiting around them. Now think, that's just one "dark spot" in the universe that they thought was nothing.
I think it is entirely possible that there is intelligent life put there, but I have yet to see any real evidence of it. With the size of the universe, intelligent civilizations could rise and fall without us ever knowing about them. The only evidence we would ever see is their radio transmissions (if any were used) as they spread throughout the universe, and likely they would have ceased to exist before their signals reached us here.
