I'd be interested to hear how the author of this debate meant the question. I could probably refine my argument a little if I knew exactly how you meant it.
That depends what you mean by necessary. Did they need to drop it to win the war? of course not. Japan had no hope of winning at that point. Victory was only a matter of time. In that sense no it wasn't necessary. If what you mean is was it justified, then I'd say yes. it saved alot of American lives, and possibly alot of Japanese lives too. Since the plan for invading the home islands of Japan would have killed hundreds of thousands. Also they were afraid the USSR would invade and take over alot of Japan which they wanted to avoid. And history showed us that being subjects of the Soviets was a horrible thing.
