Karma is no different that any other religious belief. I mean saying if you do bad things you go to hell is fundamentally no different.
While I don't think these belief systems are necessary or overall beneficial, if everyone believed that they would suffer for doing bad things the world would be a better place.
I don't believe in karma people said don't do bad things because karma will get you not because it is against your own principle or it might hurt somebody other. The thing is that what I make decision is the decision which follows your own principle regardless what karma would do or would not do.
I suppose that depends on how seriously you take it. I'm ok with people believing that if you do good things, good things will happen to you. if everyone believed that then it would be true more often than not because those around you would be doing good things.
