Yeah, I do it quite frequently actually... We have a guy in our town that regularly hitches to and from work; I pick him up all the time.
I also hitchhike frequently on some of our mountain passes when snowboarding. It's quite a common practice for people who backcountry ski to hitchhike back to their car. I've also picked up people waiting at bus stops late at night, knowing the bus won't be there for another 30-45 minutes.... It's really not that big a deal in my book.
Now, I'll grant you, I'm a white male in a older car and don't carry much cash on me at any time; meaning I have very little to fear from a hitchhiker. I do understand other demographics put themselves at a lot greater risk of violence if they do choose to pick up hitchhikers.
It's too dangerous. Especially with all the scams now. The organized crime units have also expanded... so call me paranoid but I would never. If the person is hurt I would call 911.
