You are born with your ethnicity and gender. Traditions and religions are things that can be decided and changes depending on the person. If you don't like or agree with your parents religion or traditions, you are free to decide that you don't want to follow them. Income is within your control. You can't decide that you want to be a millionaire, but there are always ways to improve your economic conditions.
Furthermore, even the parts of your life that you are born with and cannot change, you have the decision whether to let them define you or if you will overcome any perceived disadvantages. I'm not saying that true equality exists, or that other people's prejudices might not interfere with your life, but you don't have to let that control who you are.
One's perception is filtered through their own experiences, one can even be proactive or reactive with their filter if they can realize it. One could catalog and shape their external influences if they choose, or said individual could also "do what everyone else is doing" and allow external impressions and influences shape their choices. Yes our perceptions are based on both internal and external entities, but we can intentionally adjust the filter.
Do you control you or, you who believe to be in control, is it that you simply are? And in the event of being, thinking, perceiving, you try to modify yourself after periodic internal dialogues? And if so, isn't the external world around you always a part of that conversation? Ethnicity is just a minor biological variation on the same theme of 'human', only you determine your goal internally, and you can spend your free time where you will. But you cannot escape who you are. You can achieve that which you will. Self-conditioning is not a perfect method, and your environment will spurn you on or hinder you, given how compatible or incompatible it is nature is with your nature. And you cannot escape those in the world whose goal is to manipulate you and use you. Maybe you can set your goals and change enough to overcome any two or three obstructions to freedom, but you'll always be conditional to, controlled by, molded by, or indebted to, something.
