God does not exist, so if someone is telling you what their imaginary friend thinks then you probably shouldn't take them seriously.

But if he changes church policy, doesn't that indicate that the prohibition against homosexuality was an opinion of previous religious leaders, not of God, since God wouldn't need to change his mind since he knows everything.

That's also up for argument in the Catholic Church now though. Pope Francis had made the same kinds of arguments in support of welcoming all people to the church.

But all religious leaders are people too. How do you trust that they know God's view and are not just trying to impose their own? God forbade eating pork, which at the time was in their people's best interest because some diseases in pigs can be transmitted to humans. But how much if that rule was God and how much was them telling people to stop doing it? God forbids gay marriage in many religious beliefs. Where does this come from? How do we know it is God and not the religious leaders who oppose it? If we accept that God makes everyone, why would he make some people who he does not approve of?

But isn't that the Pastor, Priest or religious persons job? I don't think because they studied the religious text and believe that is what God wants necessarily makes them untrustworthy. Many people who speak from God do it in the best interests of the people under them (speaking specifically of religious leaders).
Now, if I were to say something for personal gain, such as God wants you to give me a hundred dollars, I would consider that to be untrustworthy.

i understand what you are saying dave. anyone who quotes god to back up an argument is obvisouly corrupt. no one knows exactly what he thinks except for the ten commandments, which he has laid down as a set of rules for us to follow, which should be a general guideline for anyone, religious or not. dont cheat, kill, steal etc.... its a generally good set of rules to follow. but stating god said this god said that wont win an argument. you should state your opinion, and thats it. using any source you. havent had contact with directly is bad.

I have never tried to claim I know what God thinks. I have said what religious people believe, and what various religious texts say, but if there is an omnipotent deity, I can't imagine what they would think.

The intention of the topic is that, generally, when someone is saying "God thinks this" it is coincidentally exactly the same as their personal opinion. I have never seen someone say "I hate these people, but God says they are OK."

I'm pretty sure you have done this on many of my debates therefore everything you say instantly becomes invalid?
