I respect that other people have differing opinions and beliefs than myself but I cannot respect illegal, immoral beliefs that harm others.
I think this statement needs rephrasing. Respecting the individual is one thing. Respecting the belief is another. I don't respect all beliefs but I do respect all people until I'm given a reason not to. I would agree that losing respect for someone because of their belief should not be unless, of course, they take violent or offensive action due to their belief. They can go on and hate a certain race or religion or have certain thoughts that I don't agree with, however, once action is taken then that is when I stop respecting them.
This is why I don't believe in equality. Equality for one is inequality for others.
In all honesty, I think some beliefs just don't deserve my respect. People can believe whatever they want, and I can believe that many people are idiots.
tolerate is the word
Unless they're actively using their belief to harm others, you should respect their RIGHT to that belief. Whether or not you respect the belief itself is a different story.
some beliefs (socialism, Nazism, pedophilia, necrophilia) get in the way of others beliefs. the Aztecs for example, believed that they must sacrifice people for the sun to rise. that is their belief and even if you were the one to be sacrificed and you didn't believe the sun needed to be appeased, you should stand against their beliefs, because that's oppression (sarcasm).
